Reiki Heals Knee Injury

JpgP_800.jpg

Reiki Heals Knee Injury

Reiki Heals Knee Injury

I began learning Reiki some two years ago, initially my parents were both very skeptical. My father has been suffering from knee problems for many years due he thought to an injury received in a parachute jump. He asked me to do Reiki on his knee as he had found that after it flared up again he had been to the doctor and told they couldn’t find a major problem which left him at a loss to what was wrong with his knee.

I sat on the floor and he sat in a chair and I gave Reiki just on his knee for the first session. During the treatment my dad fell asleep and on waking him after the Reiki he said it was the best sleep he had had in many years and he was only asleep for about an hour. During the treatment I picked up that he seemed to have a blockage in his heart centre and solar plexus. I explained to him I felt the knee injury to be part of his body’s way of warning him of stress as it seemed he was in pain when stressed or dealing with emotional difficulty. He was skeptical about the Reiki but on contacting him the next day he said the pain had gone completely and he felt very well. I suggested he keep track of when the pain arrived and see if he could relate it to his emotions. Again the pain returned to his knee—I gave him Reiki but this time a full treatment so his chakra areas were treated also. Many months later my parents have decided to emigrate and my dad agrees since making this decision his knee has stopped giving him any trouble. He feels the Reiki helped him to come to a decision to live for himself and his wife and with this new emotional choice the old pain or reminder has gone.

My Dad will go from skeptic to Reiki I as I am due to attune both my parents in July when I have my masters. They will be the first I attune. Just thought you should all know the power Reiki has as well as bringing pain relief it heals on all levels and helps you to achieve the goals you should be achieving.

Treating Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) with Reiki

Treating Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) with Reiki

Treating Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) with Reiki

I offer Reiki to patients in a local doctor’s waiting room. Shortly after starting this work, I noticed Heidi, one of the staff members, moving slowly and bracing herself as she walked. She told me that she had been on a cruise a month before and since then had been dizzy, fatigued, imbalanced, and was having difficulty concentrating. When I asked her to tell me more, she explained that on the third day of the six-day cruise vacation, the ship stopped in Jamaica. “When we got off the ship, I asked my husband if the pier was moving. He said no and looked at me kind of funny. On and off that day, I kept feeling like I was swaying a bit. When we got back on the ship, however, I was fine. Then, after arriving back in Miami, as soon as I got off the ship, I felt a swaying, rocking sensation. I didn’t think much of it; it was our first cruise, so I figured it would go away. My husband said he was feeling the same way off and on, and other friends said this was pretty normal. My husband’s swaying sensation lasted four days.”

Her situation worsened. In two weeks, she couldn’t walk without holding onto something to keep her from falling. She felt a rocking, bobbing sensation, and also some brain fog, headaches, ear fullness, heaviness, and the sensation of gravitational pull on her head and bottom. The only way she could get a small amount of relief was to lie or sit down. Scared, Heidi went to her primary care provider, who ran some lab tests, but nothing appeared to be wrong, even though she and the provider knew that something was seriously wrong. She was referred to an eye, nose and throat specialist, who diagnosed her with Mal de Debarquement Syndrome or Disembarkment Syndrome (MdDS). Simply explained, MdDS is a form of motion sickness that can continue long after the motion has ended, causing many problems as Heidi had learned firsthand. A nurse practitioner at her job suggested Reiki, “so I gave it a shot. At that point, I would have tried anything.”

After hearing her story, I offered Heidi a 20 minute Reiki session. My first instinct was to balance her energies. I used the integration technique (wrists and ankles crossed, reversed after 10 minutes, Reiki at the head and feet). She felt some relief after the treatment but two days later she was the same. “After my first session, they asked how I felt and honestly, I didn’t feel much relief. I later gave Heidi a 20 minute traditional Reiki session, which again gave temporary relief. The following day, I was working in the office and she had called in sick because her symptoms were getting worse. I spent that night doing research on the Internet, which led to the realization that it was probably a grounding issue, since most of my research pointed to MdM sufferers grounding themselves. My thought was that the higher frequency Life Force Energy that I would normally channel would not be as helpful for grounding. Yet, the way that I had channeled the Reiki in our previous two sessions had not accomplished this for her.

The next time we were both in the office, we did another 20 minute session, at which time I explained to her that I would be making use of a Reiki different technique. This time, I stayed at her feet. My intention was to ground myself as strongly as possible, which I did by visualizing the tree at the corner of the building. I saw and felt myself sinking into the roots and gently pulled her down with me. I repeated the names of the Usui and Karuna Reiki® grounding symbols in my head throughout the entire treatment. Afterward, I gave her written directions on grounding herself.

Heidi reported that after the session, she felt great. The swaying/bobbing sensation went from an 8–10 down to a 3–4. “It was amazing. I was able to go home and function a little more than I had in weeks. After another session with Ken, I continued to feel better. Now, I’m at about a 2 on the scale.” I saw Heidi a few days later and she looked like a different person. The color was back in her face and she was smiling. After a hug she told me that there were barely any remaining symptoms.

“I’m an average Joe and don’t know much about how Reiki works. I’ve never had any experiences with it before this, but I can tell you that after having the Reiki sessions, I’m a believer. I tell everyone about Reiki. This has been truly an amazing experience for me. Many thanks to Stephanie Gale for suggesting this to me, to Dr. Martha Hackett for opening up her office to this wonderful world of Reiki and last, but not least, to Ken Egbert the Reiki Master for sharing his wonderful gift with me.”

Reiki Helping Hospice Patients

I offer Reiki as a hospice volunteer. I had the honor of seeing a patient weekly for 18 months. She was suffering from heart failure. During our sessions, she relaxed, and many times slept. Afterward, she was thankful and expressed feeling good. When she was in pain, the pain would go away. The last time I saw her, she stated that she could receive Reiki all day.

I had another patient that had kidney cancer. She was experiencing pain in her hip. I only saw her twice before she passed, but the Reiki made a difference. The first time I saw her, I could see the stress on her face. Our session lasted an hour, and she slept. Afterward, she was relaxed and expressed feeling relief from her pain. The second time I saw her, she was in pain to the point of tears. Again, she slept during our session. When she woke up, she was smiling from ear to ear.

It has been such a joy to see how Reiki offers relief from stress and pain. Sharing Reiki with others is an awesome experience. It is very rewarding to be a positive force in people's lives.

Cats and Cancer

My two cats go nuts more for Reiki than catnip. Our eldest cat Toby, was diagnosed with kidney disorders and that without daily fluids and possibly an expensive surgery she would surely die painfully. This was back in 2004; at the time I as a Level II Reiki practitioner. I immediately began extensive Reiki treatments to the cat, which she very willingly accepted. In 2003, I attended William Rand’s Master teacher class in Glastonbury; One of the most magical moments in my life. Thanks William. Our final attunement was performed within the circle of Stonehenge. (Which leads to my second story... but lets finish with Toby the cat first.) When I returned from England, that class shot my skills and connection with the source to an incredible height. I had been teaching as often as possible ever since. Toby the cat... is now 16, and prancing like a kitten. Whenever she’s having a low day, she jumps in my lap and claws my legs to let me know she wants Reiki. Then when she’s had her fill, she nips my fingers. It’s a wonderful bonding experience... and consequently the vet still can’t believe this cat is still alive. lol

The second story is not mine but is linked to my England visit with William. My traveling companion was Brian, who came to the same class too. His father was diagnosed with stage four lung cancers at nearly 80 years of age. His father had pretty much decided this was it, and refused treatment and hospice care. Brian stood between the gate stones of Stonehenge and sent long distance Reiki to his father... when he returned home to the states, he found his father in an amazing turnaround of health. With some more long distance treatments, (because his father wasn't really receptive of any treatment whatsoever) his dad had a complete remission, no cancer in his body anywhere. The doctors actually used the word Miracle. His father enjoyed four more years of healthy life until he finally succumbed to a heart attack.

These were just two stories of my experiences with Reiki, and more happen every day. However the most miraculous effects of Reiki healing are when I teach. Reiki loves being shared, and my students always write back saying "I don’t know how I lived without it!"

Blessed Be.

TakataPhoto.jpg

806 - 6th St. E.

Saskatoon, Sask

S7H 1C7

December 31, 1997

【Origin and Validity of the Grandmaster Title and Other Important Issues】

806 - 6th St. E.

December 31, 1997

Dear Reiki Masters,

I am writing this letter to share my truth in response to the present events that surround the practice of Reiki, in particular, the design of Office of the Grand Master, the concept of a sole and rightful heir, lineage bearer, trademarking and licensing.

I write to provide a more complete picture of the growth of the Usui System of Reiki. I write because I have the courage and understanding now to do so. I write to encourage other people to speak their truth. I write so that I can honour the life force as it lives within me.

I was trained by Phyllis Furumoto in January, 1981 in the first two levels of Reiki. During my 1st level seminar, I received three gifts: the knowing that I was a teacher of this natural healing art (it was known then as Reiki - A Japanese Natural Healing Art), the knowing that it was an individual path and that my inner wisdom would always guide me, the knowing that when I touched healing happened. The actualization of this wisdom has strengthened over the ensuing years with the challenges presented to me.

I was initiated as a Reiki Master on April 1, 1982. I was the fourth Reiki Master that Phyllis initiated. I paid Phyllis $10,000. Phyllis asked me to make two commitments: to honour Reiki as an oral tradition and for it to be my sole source of income. I committed. I also committed to bringing forth the master in me. I have upheld my commitment to the oral tradition. At the time of making that commitment I did not really understand what it meant to commit to an oral tradition. I was a single parent with two children and no other source of income. It was a huge leap of faith to trust that the universe would totally provide all that I needed to raise and provide for my family. My work as a teacher of natural healing and my life have been supported by this practice. I have been invited to travel extensively to give seminars and treatments. It has been a profound experience of support and love. It has taught me the essence of Reiki. I have upheld the commitment to it being my sole source of income. On April 1, 1996, I took my healing work into the corporate world, where I have gained experience and strength in standing strong in the face of politics and the bottom line of making a profit. I live the practice quietly and continue to deepen my understanding of what it is to follow my inner wisdom and to dedicate my life to mastery.

Some of the memories that I want to share are parts of conversations that Phyllis had with me during my seminars in the first two levels of Reiki, my subsequent training as a Reiki Master and my friendship with her that extended over several years. I have held these conversations in confidence based on my personal ethics. The interactive relationship with Phyllis no longer exists and that is of my choosing. I have felt for many years that I cannot align with the control and power which she exerts in her role. Phyllis and I were strong catalysts for each other. We each have our own destiny to fulfil. As in all relationships, we have the right to agree and disagree. I want to state clearly that I have no interest in making Phyllis appear "wrong" for her choices. I wish only to speak from my heart and some of what I have to say is in disagreement with her choices. It was a difficult path for me because she was my teacher and friend. I was taught that one of the Reiki precepts was to honour one's teacher.

I met Phyllis shortly after her grandmother, Hawayo Takata died. Over a period of several years (1981 - 1984) we were in close association. Phyllis confided in me. She talked to me in great detail of her confusion over her grandmother's death, her grandmother's lack of clarifying Phyllis's future role, her lack of direction in her own life and her fear of the opportunity that was before her to step forward into the position that her grandmother had filled.

I remember the day that she arrived at my house and pronounced that she had made a decision. Her decision was clear. She said, "I will go for the money." She had decided to pursue her grandmother's work – teaching classes, initiating Masters - for the income potential. She initiated four Masters between Feb.1981 and April 1982. She began to plan the first gathering of Reiki Masters in Hawaii ( April 1982) and the memorial service for her grandmother. In many ways, she was already acting as though she was walking in her grandmother's shoes.

Her statement of " I will go for the money" impacted me deeply. It felt wrong to me given my own experience of Reiki. Even though I was a neophyte, I had felt the depth inherent in Reiki. I had felt the spiritual impact. Her decision was a materialistic decision. In my experience, there was no spiritual awareness associated with it and I felt the paradox of that. My confusion regarding "honouring my teacher" deepened.

I sat in the circle at the first gathering of Reiki Masters in Hawaii in 1982. I had been an initiated Master for 10 days. I listened to the stories of how Takata had taught each master differently. We drew the symbols together. It was quite shocking to the group to find out that they were different, similar in some respects and different in others. What did this mean? Discussion around this led to an agreement that we would all use the same symbols. I no longer remember exactly how we determined the correct symbols. It marked the beginning of attempted standardization. Takata's unique method of teaching was a source of great upset. We did not understand the uniqueness and came to it with our Western notion of uniformity and standardization. It was not apparent from the discussion that anyone in the group understood the real relationship of the symbols as a catalyst for inner awakening and connection to the Energy. If this had been understood at the time, we would not have engaged in the process of needing to have everyone's symbols be exactly the same. Is this understood now? Do we understand that Takata's way of teaching allowed each master freedom to discover their own uniqueness? Do we understand that each Master is unique?

I also heard the confusion. No successor had been named. Barbara Weber was representing herself as the next leader. This was a source of concern because she had taken actions and was making claims about some agreements with Takata. Also, she had been invited to participate in the gathering and had declined. Phyllis was questioned about what Takata had said to her before she died. Phyllis said that her grandmother had hoped that she would follow in her footsteps, but that she had not said anything definitive about it. Phyllis was questioned about any additional knowledge or symbols that Takata had given her. She did not have any. But she was the only person that had started to initiate masters in the group. She was in many ways leading the gathering. She said that she was open to being chosen as the person who would follow in Takata's footsteps and eventually that is what appeared to happen. It seemed that nobody wanted the responsibility of the role except Phyllis and nobody really understood what was to happen. I think that we did not have a glimmer of understanding of how Reiki could have moved forward without a "leader."

At that gathering, I received another profound gift. I had a powerful experience regarding the concept of grand master. I knew from deep within my being that I had the potential of being a grand master. I had just been initiated as a Master. I was the "baby" in the group. The possibility of envisioning myself embodying the concept of grand master or the notion of speaking that I had that profound inner knowing was ludicrous and terrifying. I chose not to speak of it.

I wish that I had had the courage and trust of my heart to speak. It could have made a great difference to the future of Reiki. It is clear to me that if I had spoken, it would have initiated a discussion about the concept of "grand master." The future of the Usui System of Reiki may have looked very different. Consider for a moment a discussion about the concept of "grand master" amongst those Reiki masters. "Grand master", not as a title or a position, but as a possibility that each and every one of us can aspire to. I believe that at some level everyone at that gathering had this energy experience of the potential of grand mastery. I know that as one of the participants, I felt that energy through my body and I felt the full force and potential of that awareness. I know that we all have the opportunity to direct our lives to grand mastery. We could be living in the question "What is grand mastery"? A powerful spiritual focus that is our birthright. To live in this question is quite different from acting as if we are "grand masters". If there is a designation or honouring with a title, I believe that it must be earned from living an exemplary life.

It seems to me that everyone has forgotten the naivity of the participants at the meeting. It was the first time that a group of Reiki Masters had sat together in America. We were all essentially "babies" in our practice of Reiki. We were dealing with issues that required wisdom and maturity in the practice of Reiki. I don't feel that we even began to understand that at the time. The lack of understanding of succession, the confusion over Takata's method of teaching, the variations in the symbols, the threat that Barbara Weber would fill the gap provided by Takata's death were expressed fears within the group. Nobody there knew the decision that Phyllis had made "to go for the money," except me and I did not share that information. None of the people present took the fact that Takata had not designated a successor to mean that there was not to be a successor. It is possible that this is the truth.

A further development happened at the next gathering of Reiki Masters, which was held at Barbara Brown's home in British Columbia in 1983. The Reiki Alliance was formed. I can no longer recall exact details. I remember that Phyllis was acting as the leader and most persons there moved with the energy of the situation. I remember spending days working on the purpose statement of the Reiki Alliance. It was the beginning of the further westernisation of Reiki. As people born and raised in the West, we have a certain set of values and definitions. When these definitions and values are applied to a set of values and definitions from another culture, they change the original meaning. In the case of Reiki, I think that we have deviated greatly from the original teaching and intent. It requires intensive study and contemplation to understand a different culture. The only way we had of understanding was through our Western mind set. This Western way of thinking coupled with Phyllis's own motivation led to her being known as Grand Master and later, her proclamation of being a lineage bearer and now, that she is the sole and rightful heir of the Usui System of Reiki. I do not think that what transpired was in the energy of the system itself, rather an outcome of the Western way and Phyllis's ambition.

At the next gathering of the Reiki Alliance, one of the Masters asked Phyllis to talk about what happened when Takata died and the process of how she came to claim to be a successor. She began to tell a story that was a fabrication. I called for truth. Phyllis retracted her statements, but the question remained unanswered. After that gathering, I left the Reiki Alliance. I felt that Phyllis had created a fabrication around the Usui System of Reiki that was a protection for her own purposes. I began to walk my own path with Reiki. I began the process of following my inner wisdom.

For the past seventeen years, I have been deepening my understanding and integrating those first three gifts from my first level seminar and the fourth gift from my sitting in the circle in Hawaii in 1982. Those spiritual experiences have been my guides in this journey. It is a blessing in my life that they have led to greater and greater simplicity and love.

I do not align with the complex notions that are currently expressed by Phyllis about this practice. I do not align with any of the notions of a role of grandmaster, office of grandmaster, lineage bearer, sole and rightful heir of the Usui System of Reiki or licensing fees for Masters because they do not come from the system itself. What is all this for? Who benefits from all this "stuff?" It looks to me like Phyllis does.

The notions of form, discipline and practice are inherent in the way that this healing art is presented by the Reiki Master. At least at one time this was true. In the oral tradition, the emphasis was on self-discovery and embodied in the concept " allow the Energy to lead you". There is no need to have lengthy treatises about it. Trust the Reiki Master to live it and model it. It is simple. It exists.

We are all lineage bearers, rightful heirs and potentially grandmasters. It is not the exclusive right of one person. We have a great opportunity to free ourselves from confusion and return to the true simplicity of this gentle practice. I believe that we have the maturity and understanding at this time to speak, to be heard and bring forth the dignity and integrity of this teaching. We are all responsible for what has happened and we are all responsible for the future.

To be a Reiki Master is to hold a sacred trust. This purity of heart is the essence of what we have to share. I pray that together we can bring that purity forth to clarify the past, live what we teach and teach what we live.

I send you this letter with love and blessings,

Reiki Before Usui

William Lee Rand

(An Evidence Based History of Reiki)”中描述的歷史研究方法。

在我與 Arjava Petter 和 Walter Lubeck 於 2001 年出版的《靈氣之靈/The Spirit of Reiki》一書中,第 22 頁有靈氣的定義。

Reiki Before Usui

by William Lee Rand

This article is part of a series of articles based on the historical research methods described in the article, “An Evidence Based History of Reiki,” which appeared in the Fall 2013 issue of Reiki News Magazine. The purpose of these articles is to dispel the myths about the history and practice of Reiki that first appeared in Western Reiki and have developed since then. It is important that an understanding of Reiki be based on verified facts so that its true nature will be understood, appreciated and practiced.

Many in the Reiki community think that Reiki is something that Usui Sensei developed and that the word should only be applied to his system of healing. But even a cursory examination of the historical evidence reveals that the word Reiki had been in the Japanese lexicon long before Usui Sensei used it. Furthermore, there were other healing systems in existence before Usui Reiki was developed that used the name Reiki and/or used Reiki energy. Clearly, Reiki is a name that isn't exclusive to Usui Reiki but can be applied to any style of healing that uses Reiki energy.

History of the Japanese Language

The Japanese did not have a written language until the seventh century AD when writing became widespread.(1) The system of writing that was developed was based on Chinese ideograms. This system of Chinese characters were first developed around 1200 BC and was standardized during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) resulting in hanzi or kanji as they are called in Japanese. Because of this, many Japanese and Chinese concepts are written using the same characters, making it possible for the Japanese to have an understanding of Chinese writing and vise versa. The hanzi ideograms for rei and ki were introduced to Japan at this time. In Chinese these ideograms are pronounced ling and qi respectively and have similar meanings as they do in Japanese. This indicates that the root concept for Reiki is several thousand years old.(2)

It is not known exactly when Rei and Ki were joined together to form a word; further research is necessary to determine the date and how it was used. But current understanding is that it was sometime after the written Japanese language developed and before it was used by Usui Sensei.

The following is a definition for each of the parts of the Reiki kanji provided by Hiroshi Doi, Japanese Gendai Reiki Ho founder and member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai:

The Kanji of 靈 rei has 3 parts; one 雨, three 口and one 巫.

1) 雨 ame (rain), is a blessing from the Great Universe. It showers down from the sky above, allows living things to grow on the ground, and heals and cleanses everything.

2) Three squares (originally circles) mean the three elements of a human being; body, mind and soul.

3) 巫 means 巫女 (miko) medium who channels God’s will and her mission is to connect heaven and earth.

That is to say, the original meaning of 靈 is the unity of the Great Universe with a human being.

The Kanji of 氣ki is divided into 2 parts.

1. 气, which is said to be formed from the shape of steam or a cloud.

2. The other part, 米, read kome, meaning a staple food like rice.

氣 represents the energy of boiling steam that pushes up the heavy lid of a pot of cooking rice.

The ancient Chinese recognized human breathing, wind (breathing of nature), fog, cloud and steam as 氣. They thought that 1) 氣 is an ever-changing, gaseous material that is ubiquitous and flows everywhere in the universe including in the human body. 2) 氣 is the primal essence of everything in the universe and it is the source of life force and energies that create our physical and mental functions.

Therefore 靈氣 Reiki is the energy of life that is being guided by the Great Universe (the Universal Being of Wisdom and Love) and can be channeled by those who have received this special ability.

Mataji Kawakami

Mataji KawakamiIn an email I received September 29, 2013, Doi Sensei said he had been an honorary adviser for the Global Holistic Healing Association in Japan, an organization that practiced Usui Reiki. Katsuyuki Takashahi was a supporting member who wrote a newsletter called Holistic Healing. In the February 2003 issue of the newsletter he included a note about Mataji Kawakami, who was a Ryojutsu-ka (therapist) and president of Trinity Research. In 1914, Kawakami founded a healing practice he called Reiki Ryoho. He had the term Reiki Ryoho recognized by the medical and educational experts of the time and wrote a book titled, Reiki Ryoho to Sono Koka, 霊気療法とその効果 , Reiki Healing and its Effects, which was published in 1919.

According to Doi Sensei and Toshitaka Mochizuki, another esteemed Japanese Reiki sensei and author, there were several other Reiki healing methods being practiced in Japan prior to Usui Reiki Ryoho. These include: 霊感透熱療法 Reikan Tonetsu Ryoho created by Reikaku Ishinuki, 洗心流霊気療法 Senshin-ryu Reiki Ryoho created by Kogetsu Matsubara and 生道霊掌術 Seido Reisho-jutsu created by Reisen Oyama.(3)

It is also important to note that Usui Sensei didn't call his system of healing Reiki; he called it Shin-shin Kai-Zen Usui Reiki Ryoho (The Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind) or in the shorter version, Usui Reiki Ryoho. This indicates that Usui Sensei understood that what he developed was his style of Reiki healing, not the only style.

So from this information we can see that Reiki isn't a name that applies only to the system of healing Usui Sensei developed, but can be used by any system of healing that uses Reiki energy.

Reiki Energy Defined

So what is Reiki energy and how can we recognize it? In The Spirit of Reiki, a book published in 2001 that I wrote along with Arjava Petter and Walter Lubeck, there is a definition of Reiki on page 22. It explains that Reiki is any healing energy that fulfills the following four criteria:

1. The ability to perform Reiki comes from having received an attunement, rather than developing the ability over time through the use of meditation or other exercises.

2. All Reiki techniques are part of a lineage, meaning the technique has been passed from teacher to student through an attunement process, starting with [the founder of the technique].

3. Reiki does not require that one guides the energy with the mind, as it is guided by the higher power that knows what vibration or combination of vibrations [are needed by the client].

4. Reiki can do no harm.(4)

I hope this gives you a better understanding and appreciation for Reiki. I encourage you to use Reiki more frequently to bring happiness and healing to yourself and to those who come to you for help. May you always be blessed by the love and wisdom of the Universe.

Takata's Handouts

William Lee Rand

TakataCertificate.jpg

TakataLetter.jpg

Takata's Handouts

William Lee Rand

Despite the myths she created, it’s important to remember that Takata was an excellent healer and that she accumulated invaluable experience over her 40 years of practice. In addition, the system she created, though different than what she had been taught, is an effective healing system. it's important that we have a clear idea of how she practiced for historical reasons, but it also has value because of the usefulness of her healing and teaching methods.

Therefore, it's important that we forgive her for the confusion some of her methods created and honor her for the value of her legacy. One of the myths that Takata created is that Reiki is an oral tradition. Although she herself had been given a manual by Hayashi, she made it a rule that students not be given anything in writing and should not be allowed to take notes or tape-record Reiki classes.

This requirement prevented accurate records from being created about how she taught. Since her students had only memory to rely on, over time, changes developed in how Reiki was practiced and taught. In addition to variations in how her students remembered information, Takata sometimes changed what she taught from class to class.

All of this has created confusion within the Reiki community about the history and practice of Reiki and has allowed many conflicting ideas and systems to develop. Only through careful research, including interviews with her few surviving students and information from her two biographies has it been possible to discover how she did actually practice and teach. This information is provided in an article researched and written by Marianne Streich:“How Hawayo Takata Practiced and Taught Reiki” (Spring 2007).

However, I recently learned that Takata didn’t always teach the oral tradition. This fact came to me by the way of a packet I received in the mail from Alice Picking. Alice had taken a Reiki I class from Takata in June 1975 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In this class Takata mentioned nothing about an oral tradition. Instead, she provided instructional handouts to her students and allowed them to take notes. The packet I received included Alice’s copy of the handouts Takata had given students, along with the notes she had taken. She also sent her Reiki certificate signed by Takata, several handwritten letters from Takata, along with a postmarked envelope, and the class list of 20 students. I talked with several of the students on the class list, and they verified the information Alice had sent me.

After receiving her training from Hayashi Sensei during a yearlong internship at his clinic in Japan, Mrs. Takata brought Reiki to Hawaii in 1938. She became an accomplished healer, practicing and teaching Reiki until her passing in 1980, a period of over 40 years. This was a great accomplishment, as her work prevented Reiki from falling into obscurity after World War II, and allowed Reiki to become established as a popular practice. It has since grown to include millions of practitioners worldwide.

After World War II, circumstances in Japan greatly curtailed the availability of information about Reiki. Takata became the main source. Takata changed the system of Reiki from what she was taught by Hayashi Sensei. According to John Harvey Gray, one of her Master students, Takata told him she had simplified the system, making it easier for Westerners to learn.1 This included eliminating the hand position system she had been taught and replacing it with seven or eight positions, which she called the foundation treatment. She also left out many of the important healing techniques she had learned from Hayashi Sensei.

Even though she had changed Hayashi’s system, the dominant idea she promoted to most of her students was that she was teaching the unaltered system created by Usui Sensei. There were also factual errors in her version of Reiki history. Not having any other source of information about Reiki, students were inclined to believe her. This idea continued to be promoted by some of her students after her passing, thus perpetuating misinformation and discouraging research into how Reiki had been practiced by its founders.

Fortunately, curiosity prevailed and in the 1990’s several researchers including Toshitaka Mochizuki, Frank Arjava Petter and Hiroshi Doi began providing professionally researched and verifiable information about how Hayashi and Usui had practiced Reiki. This information included the location of Usui Sensei’s grave and memorial stone, and contact with the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Japan. We now have a much clearer picture of the history and practice of Reiki. Today, most of the original methods are being taught by various Reiki schools.

Opposite Page: Takata Letter from 1977. Included in the packet from Alice Picking was a letter Takata sent out to those who sponsored her classes. In it Takata thanks all who helped her promote Reiki and states she will be retiring. Added at the end is the statement that she has created three Reiki Masters to “carry on this noble work.” This is important because it indicates that she didn’t appoint these three to be Grandmasters who would be in charge of Reiki, nor that they would be her successors in any official capacity, but that their purpose was simply to carry on the work of Reiki.

Apparently she changed her mind about retiring and about having only three Masters. She created many more (a total of 22) and continued to practice and teach until her passing at the end of 1980.

The concept of Grandmaster of Reiki didn’t develop until after Takata passed. Soon after her passing, Barbara Weber Ray, one of the 22 Masters, declared that Takata had appointed her as Grandmaster of Reiki. This title was not a part of the Usui system, and Ray offered no meaningful proof to support her claim. Shortly after this, a group of Takata’s Masters asked Phyllis Furumoto if she would be the Grandmaster, and she accepted. Because there was little authentic historical information about Reiki at this time, many people accepted the concept of Grandmaster, but as research revealed the facts, this idea lost credibility within the Reiki community.

After Usui Sensei’s transition in 1926, the practice of Reiki was preserved by the organization he started: the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. However, after World War II, strict laws were passed about healing that required one to have a massage or medical license to practice Reiki. Rather than conform to this requirement, the Gakkai decided to continue as a secret organization. They stopped giving public lectures and advertising, and the members talked about Reiki only among hemselves. They would admit new members to join their group and

study Reiki only as replacements for members who died. Once one became a Shinpiden or Master, he or she wasn’t allowed to teach or even talk about Reiki outside the Gakkai. They also had strict rules governing who was allowed to be a member.

Because of this, it was very difficult for anyone to find out anything about Reiki in Japan after World War II and almost impossible to learn it. The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai remains a secret organization even today, and no one outside of the Gakkai is giving the same attunement that Usui Sensei gave.

As a result of this secrecy, Takata became the main source for training and information about Reiki from 1940 until the early 1990’s. Those in Japan who wanted to learn Reiki turned to Western Takata-style teachers who traveled to Japan to teach, or they took classes in the USA. Reiki sessions have been exchanged between Gakkai members and those from the Takata lineage, and these sessions indicate that both styles seem to provide a similar level of healing ability. Tadao Yamaguchi, who learned from his mother, Chiyoko, teaches a Reiki style whose lineage goes directly to Hayashi Sensei and attempts to closely follow his teaching.

However, most Reiki teachers in Japan today are teaching a combination of Japanese and Takata-style Reiki.

Reiki for the Dying

Reiki for the Dying

Judi Broyles

Reiki for the Dying

by Judi Broyles

Never has the power of Reiki been more apparent than when I have used it in situations of dire need. I am a hospice volunteer with Pathways in Sunnyvale, California, and I use Reiki with the patients assigned to me. Since Reiki always heals, even if it does not cure the physical body, it can help a patient to heal spiritually and emotionally to ease the pathway of transition. I have seen Reiki relieve severe pain on more than one occasion. I have seen the tremors of Parkinson’s disease cease for a while. I have witnessed a woman whose restricted ability to breathe and swallow eased with Reiki’s energy.

Working with patients in hospice presents some challenges. First, they are usually in a hospital bed and not on a massage table. That can be a challenge in itself. Often the hospital bed is pushed up against a wall, so giving Reiki is very different than being able to move and walk around a table. Other things to look out for are tubes, wires and other connections. If the person is not in a hospital bed, another approach is necessary. On one occasion, I took off my shoes and climbed up on the bed because the patient was propped up in a sitting position on the side of the bed with her legs off the bed and on a stool. I have learned to expect the unexpected. And thank God that Reiki goes to where Reiki is needed. I even considered sending distant Reiki to this patient, although I was in the same room.(1)

Using Reiki with the dying requires being acutely aware of their body and how they are using Reiki and also being aware of my body, especially my crown chakra and hands, for these are my tools and tell me what I need to know to be a good practitioner. I must also listen to my intuitive powers. My “Third Eye” plays an important role in letting me know where to place my hands for “The Greater Good.”

My very first hospice patient was a 38-year-old man with brain cancer. My Reiki Master, Donna Shaffer, was treating him, and she offered to let me go along. I soon learned that there is much to know about treating a dying patient with Reiki.

A dying patient uses Reiki energy in ways that a reasonably healthy patient does not. This energy can be more spiritual in nature and feels very gentle. It might be very intense when it is being used to relieve pain. It can be unbelievably strong as the patient’s will to live drinks it in with the great thirst of a person in the desert. It may change from one kind of energy to another from day to day or during the same session.

Once, as I was working on his heart chakra, I saw something so beautiful that I started to cry. I saw a perfect sphere with a center of glowing crystal quartz. The sphere was surrounded by a magnificent blue field that turned to lavender at the outer edge, which was surrounded by sparkling prisms of more crystals. Donna asked me if I was all right. I told her I was but that I had just seen the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life. Donna told me that my description sounded as though I had seen his soul.

I remember very well one occasion shortly before this young man surrendered his desire for life. Donna was working at his feet and I was at his head. She stepped out into the hall and was fanning herself to cool off. My hands, face, and whole body grew hotter and hotter until I didn’t think I could stand any more. Fortunately, Donna noticed and quietly told me to go put my hands under cold running water. After a while I was able to return. The last time we saw him, his energy had changed, and this time Reiki was very gentle and quiet. He died two days later. He was a wonderful young man.

My first assignment with Pathways was a 94-year-old woman. She had such a bad case of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that her doctor gave her less than six months to live and put her into hospice care. She didn’t know what Reiki was but decided to give it a try. During my first visit I spent 30 minutes trying to explain Reiki. Since I was a new practitioner, I stumbled and mumbled, and finally said, “Let me show you.” During her first treatment she told me that when I put my hands on her left foot, she felt a shock of energy in her left wrist, which she had broken several years before. On another day she saw colors.

After three months she was discharged from hospice. Laughing, she told me that during an elevator ride to her floor (she lived in a residential care facility) a woman told her that she was the talk of the town. She asked what that meant and was told, “You were on hospice and you got better!” All the residents are talking about it! I saw her privately for a while, and she is now back on hospice and once again getting well. I helped her celebrate her 95 th birthday. The less than six months to live is now a week or two shy of one year, with her 96th birthday in sight.

When Parkinson’s affects a person’s ability to breathe easily or to swallow comfortably, the result can be very frightening. I cannot imagine the feeling of constantly being suffocated and being hungry, but not being able to eat because of the inability to swallow. As I gave her Reiki, she began to breathe more easily. Her husband was astonished to see her diaphragm move up and down with each breath. He told me that he hadn’t seen her do that for a long time. When I left he had taken her to their room to rest. She was in Reiki land. I only saw this woman a few times, but the results I witnessed were amazing.

I discovered that Reiki can be extremely effective for patients with Alzheimer's. When I first began seeing an 87-year-old woman who was afflicted with this disease, she would become agitated easily and didn’t know who I was or what Reiki was, even though I had seen her before. She would say, “Do I know you?” “Reiki, I don’t know Reiki.” It became, “Oh, you’re the Reiki lady. I really like Reiki.” This woman also had Parkinson's disease with a tremor in her right hand. The first time I gave her Reiki, she started to relax, and I wondered if Reiki could stop the tremor, so I put my hands on her hand. Never would I have believed that the tremors of Parkinson’s disease could become still if I hadn’t seen it for myself. I had been told that these tremors are continuous all day, every day—even during sleep. By the end of the treatment she would be sound asleep, so I don't know how long the effect of Reiki would last, but her caregiver was constantly amazed by the change she saw. Her daughter, who is a psychologist, called to thank me. She said that Reiki had made an amazing change in her mother. She also told me that she thought her mother was nearing the end.

Treating a 62-year-old woman with multiple cancers revealed how powerful Reiki can be. She did not want any pain medication because it made her feel groggy and nauseous. The first time I saw her she was writhing in pain. I gave her Reiki and she was asleep by the time I was finished. I am told that she slept for six uninterrupted hours of much-needed rest and that it had been days since she had really slept because of the pain. I started seeing her daily because Reiki had now become her morphine. She would toss and turn trying to find a position that would give her comfort, but it wasn’t until I asked Reiki to connect me to her, to use me as a channel for its healing energy, and then place my hands on her, that she would start to relax. I would look at her face from time to time, and I could see the pain leave. I could also feel her body relax and soften as the pain was lifted.

Every day her family would anxiously wait for my arrival so that their mother could be free of pain and able to rest. She would smile when I entered her room because she knew that Reiki’s healing energy would soon be hers. The last time I saw her she was actively transitioning, and I gave her Reiki one last time. She seemed to be very peaceful when I left.

I wish the world could have shared his smile when I told a gentleman with pancreatic cancer that I would be returning every week to give him Reiki. He told me that during his first session he felt an electric current in his abdomen when my hands were there. He was sleeping when I left. The second time he had Reiki he slept for a long time. I gave his wife a Reiki treatment because, as his primary caregiver, she also needed support. He awoke before I left and told me that he felt like he was floating on a cloud. I gave him Reiki just before he died. His wife wanted him to float away on a cloud. As I see energy as colors, I saw brilliant blue for peace, lavender for love, and magenta for spirituality. It meant a lot to his family to know that he was comfortable with his transition.

All of these patients have helped me to grow as a person. It is an honor to share this spiritual time of their lives with them. They have changed my life. I have learned how to really “be there” for a person during this special time in their lives. More importantly, I want to “be there” for them. I have been given the gift of becoming a compassionate person. Frequently I am asked, “Isn’t seeing dying people depressing?” My answer is always the same: “No, because I know that I have something special to offer. I offer Reiki.”

Reiki is a gift that has been given to me. Reiki really is a gift because in a gentle, non-invasive way, I can bring comfort to those who are in transition. No amount of money can do what Reiki can do.

1 Editor’s note: In situations such as these, it may be helpful to use Beaming. Sit at a comfortable distance from the client, allow Reiki to flow, and direct your hands to a specific area or to the entire body.

Reiki Heals a Night Vision Problem

Reiki Heals a Night Vision Problem

Following Day three of a Holy Fire Reiki class with William Rand, I was very concerned about the drive home at night. I have battled night blindness for about 20 years, and it has become all but crippling in the past 10 years. It has really impacted what I can and cannot do involving driving after sunset. I have had to say “no” to many opportunities and social engagements because they would have put me on the road after dark.

My Reiki partners for the last day of class were Cheryl Ernst and Mickey, and they knew of my concerns as the minutes ticked by. My time on the Reiki table was so wonderful, nourishing and relaxing—not a lot of visuals, just a sense of peace. But then I heard William saying “Alright, time to bring your person gently back...” In the last moment as I was opening my eyes, my subconscious visual field was FILLED with thousands of white cones on a black field! Night blindness is caused by an imbalance of “cones and rods” in the eyes. I shared what I had experienced with those in my group, and Cheryl told me that she had asked Holy Fire to give me clear vision. I knew in my heart her prayer and intention had been answered!

As darkness settled in over the horizon that night, I felt the usual concern about the gathering darkness in the skies. However, I was able to drive all the way home, on rural back-country roads, in complete darkness, IN THE RAIN with perfect night vision!!!! I have not driven at night in the rain in many years and many times had to pull over and wait it out or sleep in the car for the rest of the night if rain came unexpectedly!

Holy Fire healed my night vision!!! I still feel wonderment and amazement at such a gift, and so very blessed!
