Reiki Heals Fertility Problems

Reiki Heals Fertility Problems

I was having some major fertility problems. I have stage four endometriosis. I had two, large golf ball-sized cysts, one on each ovary. My fertility doctor drained the cysts, which were blood filled, twice. However, they kept filling up with more blood. The doctor was frustrated and so were we. We went to see a Reiki Master here in Dallas. After one session, I went to the doctor and got another sonogram. The cysts were totally gone after only one session of Reiki.

My husband was having sperm problems. After two sessions with the Reiki Master, his sperm tested normal to perfect.

Reiki Heals Depression

Reiki Heals Depression

Reiki Heals Depression

One of my friends had been in an emotionally dark place for nearly a year because of failed and hurtful relationships in addition to a lack of work and income in spite of the fact that she had a college degree. She and I were out for a drink and bite to eat, and as friends do, I put my hand on her back to console her. I felt energy so strong I was actually stunned. Truthfully I hadn’t been practicing Reiki very much for quite some time at that point. Still, I felt very strongly that she needed a full session, and we did that the very next day. After her session she described her experience, and I suggested that she look into finding a Reiki Master in the area so that she could take Reiki Level I in order to do self-Reiki every day and begin to heal. Don’t you know—she actually listened! Within a week's time, not only had she received Reiki I but also Reiki Level II during a retreat. After her four-day weekend retreat, my friend returned with a clear mind and also a new outlook on her life and her relationships and a clear focus on her future. Gone was the depressed, sad friend, gone was the deep pain and suffering. I only could see a bright, sunny and relaxed friend who had begun to heal her heart and move on in a positive direction. We both plan to take a Reiki Master course, and I have a new openness to let Reiki back into my life!

Reiki Heals Dating Issues

Reiki Heals Dating Issues

Reiki Heals Dating Issues

I have a counseling client we will call Cindy. She had recently started dating and a lot of shame had begun surfacing about a long-term affair that she had during her marriage. She reported that she was obsessing over the shame. I activated all the symbols and began sending Holy Fire Reiki back to the original cause of the shame of the affair. I heard in my mind the following issues that we cleared or made progress on: fear of getting divorced, the pain of experiencing her parent’s divorce, shame of getting divorced, fear of being a single mother with three special needs kids, fear of living away from her family and being all alone if she got separated, disappointment in being married to a workaholic, sadness in being married to her husband who was emotionally unavailable, fear she was unattractive, fear she would never find love again, fear of hurting her husband and the wife of her affair partner, needing support during her marriage, and shame of the affair. Because she had previously mentioned feeling like the black sheep in her family due to constant criticism and comparison to the golden child of the family, we worked on that next. We cleared criticism from her, her mother, and then going back through all the relationships in her family and through the family lineage.

Then I heard that the Holy Fire energy wanted to provide her with grace and forgiveness. I had done the prior work with my hands in Gassho while she sat on the sofa. I walked over to her and placed my hands on either side of her head about six inches over her head to allow the energy to come into her crown. I felt a rush of God’s grace and forgiveness come in and fill her up. This was a profound experience for me and for her and caused her tears of joy. She said she had never felt God’s energy like that before and felt forgiven. At the next session, I asked her how she was feeling about the affair and she looked surprised and said she had forgotten all about it and there wasn’t a charge anymore. Additionally she felt free of the pain of her parent’s divorce and all the criticisms as a child. All this work was conducted in one session, where if I had used my counseling tools to address these issues, it would have normally taken six to 12 sessions.

Reiki Helps a Dog Run and Play Again

Reiki Helps a Dog Run and Play Again

Reiki Helps a Dog Run and Play Again

One day in rural Tennessee, my sister’s neighbor found a dog running loose on the highway. He was relieved to see that she was wearing an ID tag, but when he called her owners, he was told that they didn’t want her anymore. He took her home to his already overflowing house of animals and called my sister. Would she and her daughter, who lived close by, be willing to share her? Of course they would! The dog was a sweet, beautiful mixed breed with tons of energy. They named her Pitiful Pearl, but she was not pitiful at all! Pearl loved running all over the countryside with all the neighboring dogs. She lived at all three homes, knowing which ones had the tastiest treats, coziest beds and playmates. Then disaster struck. Pearl was hit by a truck. The vet said that her hip was dislocated and her shoulder was crushed. If she didn’t have surgery to rebuild her shoulder, she would be lame for the rest of her life. However, the surgery would cost thousands of dollars, which ruled out the option of having the surgery. That’s when I got the call. My sister asked if I could do distant Reiki on her. It was her only hope. I did Reiki on Pearl every day. I connected with her immediately and kept visualizing her and telling her, “You will walk again.” She recuperated quickly at my niece’s house, but my niece couldn’t keep her calm. One evening while my niece and her family were having dinner at my sister’s house, they heard something at the door. It was Pearl! She had jumped through the screened window and walked the half mile to have dinner with them! It had only been four days since she was released from the animal hospital. After that, there was no holding her back. She kept escaping from the house to run with her pack. Last year I took a trip out to Tennessee and finally got to meet Pearl. She acted like she already knew me and gave me a big kiss on the lips. I know she was thanking me. Pearl completely healed and doesn’t have the slightest limp. It was truly a Reiki miracle!

Reiki Clears Spirit Attachment

SpiritAttachment.jpg

Reiki Clears Spirit Attachment

I have been using Reiki since 1998 when I was first trained. Since then I became a Reiki Master teacher, a Karuna Reiki® Master teacher and have studied Crystal Reiki. Last year I was trained again as a Holy Fire Reiki Master teacher. I am amazed with the Holy Fire energy and with the gentleness others receive. During the last two months, I have had a client with a serious health problem that has persisted for the past three years. She had gone to many doctors and none of them could determine a physical reason for why she vomited every time she ate. Some of the doctors that she consulted told her that it was due to her mental condition. She was at her wits’ end.

At that point, I had recently moved to Colorado and had spoken to my new pastor about Reiki. He spoke to this particular woman, recommending that she come to see me. She eventually did make an appointment and from her description of her health problems, I mentioned that she may have a spirit attachment. I asked her if I had her permission to see if this was true. She agreed. I used the Holy Fire spirit attachment tools and techniques with her. She did have an attachment, and it was cleared. Because of her health issues and weakened state, I recommended that she have two more sessions within a 10-day period. I also felt that her home needed to be cleared. She allowed me to come to her home to see if there were any attachments there. I went into every room of her house and cleared each room. When we got to her bedroom, as I was trying to clear it, she felt ill again and mentioned that to me. I checked her chakras and she was shut down again. Once I cleared her chakras, I went back to clearing her bedroom. Once all the rooms were cleared I gave her Holy Fire Reiki. For my third session with her, I returned to her home to check again to see if she was clear and her home was clear of any attachments. All was clear. When I was ready to leave her home, she commented that she had a slight headache. While standing in her kitchen, I again gave her Holy Fire Reiki and her whole body appeared to be realigning. She has not been ill since. She is thinking more clearly, her energy has returned and she now can eat anything without vomiting.

You think you know howthe world works. You think this material universe is all there is. What if I told you the reality you know is one of many?

Reiki for Brain Trauma Makes a Big Difference

Reiki for Brain Trauma Makes a Big Difference

(Dawn Fleming)

Reiki for Brain Trauma Makes a Big Difference

Article by Dawn Fleming

At the beginning of this year, I had the opportunity to work on my first client that had brain trauma from a fall. It was an amazing experience that I will talk about in a bit. Working with this client opened up many other opportunities to work with others who have brain trauma. I really never thought about the many ways that brain trauma can occur or how Reiki could be used to help all of these different types of brain trauma.

What I learned from working with clients with brain trauma is a lot of the time they look normal as if nothing has happened to them. But when they begin to give you the list of issues, you are amazed at how they can function. Brain trauma can be caused by falls, accidents, substance abuse, strokes, surgery, blows to the head, sports injuries, infections, drowning, and being near explosions (military personnel).

My first brain trauma client Nancy had fallen twice and hit her head on the bathroom floor. The doctors told her that it would take up to 200 days laying in a dark room before she might even begin to feel a little better and be somewhat functional. And then it might take 6 months to 2 years or more to be completely healed. Her trauma had caused insomnia, focusing issues, balance issues, severe pain in her eyes and neck, fatigue, sensitivity to light, and severe headaches. Nancy could not drive, clean, think or function. She called me after 7 weeks laying in the dark. I did 10 sessions in one month. After the first session, she slept. After the third session, her pain levels dropped and her eyes were focusing. She went out to lunch with her daughter. After 10 sessions, she resumed the life that she had before the fall. She felt 90 percent better.

Reiki for Brain Trauma Makes a Big Difference

My next two clients with brain trauma had been in car accidents. Adele contacted me because her healing had stalled after two years’ time and she was not able to go back to work. She had worked on the computer and the light from the screen hurt her eyes and gave her terrible headaches and nausea. Adele had been very active, but outdoor activity would also spark headaches and make her feel nauseous. Adele was a Reiki practitioner as well but wanted someone else to help her with Reiki. After a few Reiki sessions, Adele began working again part-time, half days on her computer. She said there were no headaches. After a few more sessions she began riding her bike and running again. Sometimes if she overdoes it she feels it later. She has more healing that is needed, yet she really believes that Reiki is helping her to return to a new life.

The other car accident client that I recently began working with, had many stitches over the top of his head. His trauma caused internal bleeding, pain, confusion, agitation, and depression. When the medical staff told him he had brain trauma he is in denial about it. His mother asked him if he would be open to receiving Reiki. He had a number of other injuries as well so he agreed to receive the Reiki. Within six weeks of being in rehab, the doctors noted, after doing brain scans and testing, that his brain was healing quite well. We are continuing sessions.

Another client that I am working with has brain trauma from seven years of drug abuse. She has been drug-free for 3 years. We are working with Reiki to heal her brain, mind, and body. She has neuritis in her eyes, her nerves are firing in different places in her body, and she had depression and fatigue. When I do sessions on her, I work on her whole body. The drug abuse messed up more than just her brain. After the first session, she called to tell me that she felt so good for the first time since before she started drugs. She asked if this feeling would be permanent. Since the first session that feeling comes and goes as we continue to use Reiki to bring her body and mind back into balance.

A long time ago, a fellow Reiki Master had a brain aneurysm burst in her brain. Her daughter, a Reiki Master as well, called me and asked if I would get the word out to the rest of the Reiki community to send Reiki right away. This was before social media. I sent out an email to 700 Reiki Masters. Her daughter reported back that her mother survived the ruptured aneurysm. Statistics show that 40% of ruptured aneurysms are fatal. Of those that survive 66% suffer a permanent neurological deficit. Her mother pulled through and healed quickly. She was receiving a lot of distance Reiki on a daily basis. When she could talk to us about her experience, she said that at times she could feel waves of Reiki flowing to her and through her each day. The doctors were surprised with her recovery and noted that it was a miracle that she was still with us because of the size and location of the rupture.

When working with someone with trauma to the brain, you may be dealing with stitches, inflammation, balance issues, headaches, nausea, memory issues, body weakness, sensitivity to light, loss of coordination, confusion, loss of concentration, along with depression just to name a few. A lot of times the doctors can give medication to help with the inflammation can stitch up the areas that have been opened, but a lot of the time they rely on time and the body to heal itself. This can be a very slow process with no guarantees.

I have found that Reiki helps to remove the energy blocks, restore diminished energy, reduce pain, and give the traumatized areas a boost to accelerate the healing process. I have also found that the initial first and second sessions help the client move out of the state of despair, hopelessness, and depression into feeling hopeful and feeling brighter about their future. A positive attitude will always help to accelerate the healing process. I also believe that the sooner you can work on someone that has brain trauma after it has occurred, the impact of Reiki can make a big difference in their healing process.

Reiki in the Clinical Setting is On The Rise

(Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital and Hospice.)

Reiki in the Clinical Setting is On The Rise

Reiki is increasingly finding its way into institutional settings, from hospitals to hospices, and the push appears to be coming from patients as well as clinical practitioners.

“More and more, patients are requesting care beyond what most consider to be traditional health services, and hospitals are responding to the needs of the communities they serve by offering these therapies,” according to researcher Sita Ananth of Health Forum, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA). “And hospitals are responding to the needs of the communities they serve by offering these therapies.”

Reiki is now one of the top three complementary in-patient therapies in U.S. hospitals, according to an AHA survey. Massage therapy takes first place, with 37% of hospital patients requesting it. Number two is music and art therapy at 25%, and a very close third is “healing touch therapies” at 25%, which included Reiki and Therapeutic Touch.

Hospitals are responding, discovering for themselves the many benefits Reiki can offer. “As our health care system challenges institutions to offer high-quality but cost-effective service, Reiki is being recognized as an important tool to maximize patient care and minimize recovery time,” according to Libby Barnett and Maggie Babb, co-authors of Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch into Home, Hospital and Hospice.

Reiki: Patients love it.

For example, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York not only offers Reiki therapy to patients but also teaches Reiki once a month, inviting the patients’ caregivers, the patients themselves, and the general public to learn it. “Patients love it,” says Simone Zappa, RN, an administrator in the Integrative Medicine Department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. “And they love it because it works.”

According to an International Association of Reiki Professionals (IARP) study of “America’s Best Hospitals” (the top 25 ranked by U.S. News and World Report in 2002), 60% of them had formal or informal Reiki programs in place. All hospitals using Reiki said that they believed Reiki to be at least somewhat beneficial for patients, and 67% said they believed Reiki to be highly beneficial.

Reiki in Institutions

Acceptance of Reiki in institutions comes in part because it is so easy to incorporate into the clinical setting. It requires no specific setting, technology, or preparation. Reiki is a touch therapy, and RNs and other professionals routinely touch patients as part of their job. If they are Reiki-trained, every time they touch a patient, the patient automatically receives Reiki energy. Since long, formal sessions are not required to support a patient with Reiki therapy, opportunistic mini-treatments in the normal course of patient care make Reiki very easy to incorporate.

What Nurses and Physicians say about Reiki in the Clinical Setting

Mounting anecdotal evidence confirms its benefits over and over again. Nurses and physicians who use Reiki in the clinical setting consistently say it: Makes a patient relaxed, calm and cooperative; relieves acute and chronic pain; boosts the immune system; reduces stress; decreases the need for pain medication; improves sleep and appetite; accelerates the healing process, and has no side effects or contraindications. They also say that Reiki reduces many of the unwanted side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, including nausea and fatigue.

Self Reiki for Nurses

Since health care service in general and nursing in particular are industries with very high burnout rates, the benefits of Reiki for practitioners cannot be underestimated. Reiki is just as easily incorporated into the clinical setting for a nurse as it is for a patient, allowing the nurse immediate stress relief and relaxation after just a few minutes of self-treatment on the job.

Ongoing Research

Reiki and Surgery

Perhaps most importantly, increasing research allows Western healthcare practitioners to see quantifiable data about the effects of Reiki on patients with a variety of conditions. The largest ongoing study of Reiki in the clinical setting continues to be conducted at Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, NH, where more than 8,000 surgical patients have been given pre-and post-surgery Reiki treatments. Reiki is incorporated into their admission procedure and is also administered during transport to surgery. Treatments are given by trained RNs, physical therapists, technicians, and support staff.

Research results continue to be consistent. All the patients in this study who received Reiki had the need for less anesthesia, had less bleeding during surgery, used less pain medications, had shorter lengths of stay in the hospital, and indicated greater satisfaction with their hospital experience than other patients.

Reiki for Pain Management

The Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Canada, conducted a study on the effects of Reiki with 20 oncology patients in chronic pain. Study supervisors used both a VAS (visual analog scale) and Likert scale to measure pain before and after Reiki, and their conclusion was that Reiki greatly improved pain levels.

Reiki and Oncology

Other research with oncology patients shows that Reiki speeds up the elimination of toxins, improves immune response, helps manage side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and helps reduce the inevitable fear and anxiety that accompanies a cancer diagnosis.

Reiki and the Heart

The Section of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, at Yale University conducted a study to determine if Reiki would improve Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in patients recovering from acute coronary syndrome. Reiki is an ongoing clinical program offered on Yale-New Haven Hospital cardiac units, so the Reiki therapists in this study were 5 Reiki-trained nurses already employed in that program. To compare Reiki to musical intervention and resting control, continuous electrocardiographic readings were obtained for 12 control, 13 music, and 12 Reiki patients. The change with Reiki was significantly greater than with music (p=0.007) or resting (p=0.025).

Reiki and Chronic Illnesses

Several studies on Reiki and chronic illness indicate improvement in spleen, lymphatic and nervous system function in patients with multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, and thyroid disorder, as well as better management of symptoms in patients with AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and sleep disorders.

Reiki during Pregnancy

Research conducted at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT, showed that Reiki used during pregnancy reduced anxiety by 94 percent, reduced nausea by 80 percent, reduced pain by 78 percent, and improved sleep by 86 percent.

Reiki and End of Life Issues

For end of life issues, hospice studies show that Reiki addresses physical and emotional symptoms while improving quality of life during palliative care. Reiki promotes deep relaxation, pain management, and relief from depression with less medication. It also facilitates the release of anxiety, grief, and fear, supporting positive emotional closure with loved ones and a calm, peaceful passing.

Reiki and Children

Clinicians have found that Reiki is equally safe and effective for children. At California Pacific Medical Center, one of California’s largest hospitals, Dr. Mike Cantwell, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, provides one to three-hour-long Reiki sessions. Dr. Cantwell says, “I have found Reiki to be useful in the treatment of acute illnesses such as musculoskeletal injury, pain, headache, acute infections, and asthma. Reiki is also useful for patients with chronic illnesses, especially those associated with chronic pain.”

Reiki from Cradle to Grave

Literally from cradle to grave, patients in neonatal units, hospices, hospitals, nursing homes, surgical suites, organ transplant units, and other clinical settings are increasingly being helped by Reiki, and as a result, Reiki is being incorporated into the clinical setting more and more.

Reiki and the Body’s Creative Ability to Heal Itself

“Incorporating Reiki with conventional healthcare not only assists with curing the curable, but also provides a solution for caring for the incurable. Because Reiki facilitates the body’s creative ability to heal itself, dramatic healing shifts can occur when Reiki…is part of a medical treatment plan,” according to authors Libby Barnett and Maggie Babb.

Abstract

Post-MI patients are at increased risk of arrhythmic sudden death. Stress and sympathetic activation are known to influence arrhythmogenesis. While relaxation therapies improve psychological well-being in multiple medical illnesses, whether these therapies can positively influence sympathovagal balance in the post-MI population is unknown. We explored the physiologic effects of Reiki, a light-touch relaxation therapy, and music on post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) inpatients, using heart rate variability (HRV) to assess changes in cardiac autonomic function during treatment. Forty-eight patients with ACS within the last 72 hours were randomized to received a single 20-minute session of either Reiki, classical music, or a control "minimal distraction environment". All subjects underwent ambulatory ECG Holter monitoring. Emotional state was assessed by Likert scale. HRV was analyzed by spectral analysis via fast Fourier transformation during the baseline, intervention, and post-intervention periods and high-frequency power (lognormalized) compared via ANOVA with repeated measures. Adequate Holters were recorded in 12 control, 13 music, and 12 Reiki patients. High frequency (HF) component of HRV, an index of parasympathetic tone, increased significantly during Reiki (0.58±0.16) but not during music (-0.1±0.16) or control (0.06±0.16). RR interval increased significantly with Reiki and control, but not with music. Reiki significantly reduced reported anxiety and increased sense of relaxation compared to control (p=0.04), whereas music did not. In conclusion, post-MI recipients of light-touch from nurses trained in Reiki experienced increased vagal activity and decreased anxiety. Whether longer-term use of this therapy can improve outcomes requires further study.

Reiki Heals Knee Injury

Reiki Heals Knee Injury

Reiki Heals Knee Injury

I began learning Reiki some two years ago, initially my parents were both very skeptical. My father has been suffering from knee problems for many years due he thought to an injury received in a parachute jump. He asked me to do Reiki on his knee as he had found that after it flared up again he had been to the doctor and told they couldn’t find a major problem which left him at a loss to what was wrong with his knee.

I sat on the floor and he sat in a chair and I gave Reiki just on his knee for the first session. During the treatment my dad fell asleep and on waking him after the Reiki he said it was the best sleep he had had in many years and he was only asleep for about an hour. During the treatment I picked up that he seemed to have a blockage in his heart centre and solar plexus. I explained to him I felt the knee injury to be part of his body’s way of warning him of stress as it seemed he was in pain when stressed or dealing with emotional difficulty. He was skeptical about the Reiki but on contacting him the next day he said the pain had gone completely and he felt very well. I suggested he keep track of when the pain arrived and see if he could relate it to his emotions. Again the pain returned to his knee—I gave him Reiki but this time a full treatment so his chakra areas were treated also. Many months later my parents have decided to emigrate and my dad agrees since making this decision his knee has stopped giving him any trouble. He feels the Reiki helped him to come to a decision to live for himself and his wife and with this new emotional choice the old pain or reminder has gone.

My Dad will go from skeptic to Reiki I as I am due to attune both my parents in July when I have my masters. They will be the first I attune. Just thought you should all know the power Reiki has as well as bringing pain relief it heals on all levels and helps you to achieve the goals you should be achieving.

Treating Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) with Reiki

Treating Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) with Reiki

I offer Reiki to patients in a local doctor’s waiting room. Shortly after starting this work, I noticed Heidi, one of the staff members, moving slowly and bracing herself as she walked. She told me that she had been on a cruise a month before and since then had been dizzy, fatigued, imbalanced, and was having difficulty concentrating. When I asked her to tell me more, she explained that on the third day of the six-day cruise vacation, the ship stopped in Jamaica. “When we got off the ship, I asked my husband if the pier was moving. He said no and looked at me kind of funny. On and off that day, I kept feeling like I was swaying a bit. When we got back on the ship, however, I was fine. Then, after arriving back in Miami, as soon as I got off the ship, I felt a swaying, rocking sensation. I didn’t think much of it; it was our first cruise, so I figured it would go away. My husband said he was feeling the same way off and on, and other friends said this was pretty normal. My husband’s swaying sensation lasted four days.”

Her situation worsened. In two weeks, she couldn’t walk without holding onto something to keep her from falling. She felt a rocking, bobbing sensation, and also some brain fog, headaches, ear fullness, heaviness, and the sensation of gravitational pull on her head and bottom. The only way she could get a small amount of relief was to lie or sit down. Scared, Heidi went to her primary care provider, who ran some lab tests, but nothing appeared to be wrong, even though she and the provider knew that something was seriously wrong. She was referred to an eye, nose and throat specialist, who diagnosed her with Mal de Debarquement Syndrome or Disembarkment Syndrome (MdDS). Simply explained, MdDS is a form of motion sickness that can continue long after the motion has ended, causing many problems as Heidi had learned firsthand. A nurse practitioner at her job suggested Reiki, “so I gave it a shot. At that point, I would have tried anything.”

After hearing her story, I offered Heidi a 20 minute Reiki session. My first instinct was to balance her energies. I used the integration technique (wrists and ankles crossed, reversed after 10 minutes, Reiki at the head and feet). She felt some relief after the treatment but two days later she was the same. “After my first session, they asked how I felt and honestly, I didn’t feel much relief. I later gave Heidi a 20 minute traditional Reiki session, which again gave temporary relief. The following day, I was working in the office and she had called in sick because her symptoms were getting worse. I spent that night doing research on the Internet, which led to the realization that it was probably a grounding issue, since most of my research pointed to MdM sufferers grounding themselves. My thought was that the higher frequency Life Force Energy that I would normally channel would not be as helpful for grounding. Yet, the way that I had channeled the Reiki in our previous two sessions had not accomplished this for her.

The next time we were both in the office, we did another 20 minute session, at which time I explained to her that I would be making use of a Reiki different technique. This time, I stayed at her feet. My intention was to ground myself as strongly as possible, which I did by visualizing the tree at the corner of the building. I saw and felt myself sinking into the roots and gently pulled her down with me. I repeated the names of the Usui and Karuna Reiki® grounding symbols in my head throughout the entire treatment. Afterward, I gave her written directions on grounding herself.

Heidi reported that after the session, she felt great. The swaying/bobbing sensation went from an 8–10 down to a 3–4. “It was amazing. I was able to go home and function a little more than I had in weeks. After another session with Ken, I continued to feel better. Now, I’m at about a 2 on the scale.” I saw Heidi a few days later and she looked like a different person. The color was back in her face and she was smiling. After a hug she told me that there were barely any remaining symptoms.

“I’m an average Joe and don’t know much about how Reiki works. I’ve never had any experiences with it before this, but I can tell you that after having the Reiki sessions, I’m a believer. I tell everyone about Reiki. This has been truly an amazing experience for me. Many thanks to Stephanie Gale for suggesting this to me, to Dr. Martha Hackett for opening up her office to this wonderful world of Reiki and last, but not least, to Ken Egbert the Reiki Master for sharing his wonderful gift with me.”

Reiki Helping Hospice Patients

I offer Reiki as a hospice volunteer. I had the honor of seeing a patient weekly for 18 months. She was suffering from heart failure. During our sessions, she relaxed, and many times slept. Afterward, she was thankful and expressed feeling good. When she was in pain, the pain would go away. The last time I saw her, she stated that she could receive Reiki all day.

I had another patient that had kidney cancer. She was experiencing pain in her hip. I only saw her twice before she passed, but the Reiki made a difference. The first time I saw her, I could see the stress on her face. Our session lasted an hour, and she slept. Afterward, she was relaxed and expressed feeling relief from her pain. The second time I saw her, she was in pain to the point of tears. Again, she slept during our session. When she woke up, she was smiling from ear to ear.

It has been such a joy to see how Reiki offers relief from stress and pain. Sharing Reiki with others is an awesome experience. It is very rewarding to be a positive force in people's lives.

Cats and Cancer

My two cats go nuts more for Reiki than catnip. Our eldest cat Toby, was diagnosed with kidney disorders and that without daily fluids and possibly an expensive surgery she would surely die painfully. This was back in 2004; at the time I as a Level II Reiki practitioner. I immediately began extensive Reiki treatments to the cat, which she very willingly accepted. In 2003, I attended William Rand’s Master teacher class in Glastonbury; One of the most magical moments in my life. Thanks William. Our final attunement was performed within the circle of Stonehenge. (Which leads to my second story... but lets finish with Toby the cat first.) When I returned from England, that class shot my skills and connection with the source to an incredible height. I had been teaching as often as possible ever since. Toby the cat... is now 16, and prancing like a kitten. Whenever she’s having a low day, she jumps in my lap and claws my legs to let me know she wants Reiki. Then when she’s had her fill, she nips my fingers. It’s a wonderful bonding experience... and consequently the vet still can’t believe this cat is still alive. lol

The second story is not mine but is linked to my England visit with William. My traveling companion was Brian, who came to the same class too. His father was diagnosed with stage four lung cancers at nearly 80 years of age. His father had pretty much decided this was it, and refused treatment and hospice care. Brian stood between the gate stones of Stonehenge and sent long distance Reiki to his father... when he returned home to the states, he found his father in an amazing turnaround of health. With some more long distance treatments, (because his father wasn't really receptive of any treatment whatsoever) his dad had a complete remission, no cancer in his body anywhere. The doctors actually used the word Miracle. His father enjoyed four more years of healthy life until he finally succumbed to a heart attack.

These were just two stories of my experiences with Reiki, and more happen every day. However the most miraculous effects of Reiki healing are when I teach. Reiki loves being shared, and my students always write back saying "I don’t know how I lived without it!"

Blessed Be.

TakataPhoto.jpg

806 - 6th St. E.

Saskatoon, Sask

December 31, 1997

【Origin and Validity of the Grandmaster Title and Other Important Issues】

806 - 6th St. E.

December 31, 1997

Dear Reiki Masters,

I am writing this letter to share my truth in response to the present events that surround the practice of Reiki, in particular, the design of Office of the Grand Master, the concept of a sole and rightful heir, lineage bearer, trademarking and licensing.

I write to provide a more complete picture of the growth of the Usui System of Reiki. I write because I have the courage and understanding now to do so. I write to encourage other people to speak their truth. I write so that I can honour the life force as it lives within me.

I was trained by Phyllis Furumoto in January, 1981 in the first two levels of Reiki. During my 1st level seminar, I received three gifts: the knowing that I was a teacher of this natural healing art (it was known then as Reiki - A Japanese Natural Healing Art), the knowing that it was an individual path and that my inner wisdom would always guide me, the knowing that when I touched healing happened. The actualization of this wisdom has strengthened over the ensuing years with the challenges presented to me.

I was initiated as a Reiki Master on April 1, 1982. I was the fourth Reiki Master that Phyllis initiated. I paid Phyllis $10,000. Phyllis asked me to make two commitments: to honour Reiki as an oral tradition and for it to be my sole source of income. I committed. I also committed to bringing forth the master in me. I have upheld my commitment to the oral tradition. At the time of making that commitment I did not really understand what it meant to commit to an oral tradition. I was a single parent with two children and no other source of income. It was a huge leap of faith to trust that the universe would totally provide all that I needed to raise and provide for my family. My work as a teacher of natural healing and my life have been supported by this practice. I have been invited to travel extensively to give seminars and treatments. It has been a profound experience of support and love. It has taught me the essence of Reiki. I have upheld the commitment to it being my sole source of income. On April 1, 1996, I took my healing work into the corporate world, where I have gained experience and strength in standing strong in the face of politics and the bottom line of making a profit. I live the practice quietly and continue to deepen my understanding of what it is to follow my inner wisdom and to dedicate my life to mastery.

Some of the memories that I want to share are parts of conversations that Phyllis had with me during my seminars in the first two levels of Reiki, my subsequent training as a Reiki Master and my friendship with her that extended over several years. I have held these conversations in confidence based on my personal ethics. The interactive relationship with Phyllis no longer exists and that is of my choosing. I have felt for many years that I cannot align with the control and power which she exerts in her role. Phyllis and I were strong catalysts for each other. We each have our own destiny to fulfil. As in all relationships, we have the right to agree and disagree. I want to state clearly that I have no interest in making Phyllis appear "wrong" for her choices. I wish only to speak from my heart and some of what I have to say is in disagreement with her choices. It was a difficult path for me because she was my teacher and friend. I was taught that one of the Reiki precepts was to honour one's teacher.

I met Phyllis shortly after her grandmother, Hawayo Takata died. Over a period of several years (1981 - 1984) we were in close association. Phyllis confided in me. She talked to me in great detail of her confusion over her grandmother's death, her grandmother's lack of clarifying Phyllis's future role, her lack of direction in her own life and her fear of the opportunity that was before her to step forward into the position that her grandmother had filled.

I remember the day that she arrived at my house and pronounced that she had made a decision. Her decision was clear. She said, "I will go for the money." She had decided to pursue her grandmother's work – teaching classes, initiating Masters - for the income potential. She initiated four Masters between Feb.1981 and April 1982. She began to plan the first gathering of Reiki Masters in Hawaii ( April 1982) and the memorial service for her grandmother. In many ways, she was already acting as though she was walking in her grandmother's shoes.

Her statement of " I will go for the money" impacted me deeply. It felt wrong to me given my own experience of Reiki. Even though I was a neophyte, I had felt the depth inherent in Reiki. I had felt the spiritual impact. Her decision was a materialistic decision. In my experience, there was no spiritual awareness associated with it and I felt the paradox of that. My confusion regarding "honouring my teacher" deepened.

I sat in the circle at the first gathering of Reiki Masters in Hawaii in 1982. I had been an initiated Master for 10 days. I listened to the stories of how Takata had taught each master differently. We drew the symbols together. It was quite shocking to the group to find out that they were different, similar in some respects and different in others. What did this mean? Discussion around this led to an agreement that we would all use the same symbols. I no longer remember exactly how we determined the correct symbols. It marked the beginning of attempted standardization. Takata's unique method of teaching was a source of great upset. We did not understand the uniqueness and came to it with our Western notion of uniformity and standardization. It was not apparent from the discussion that anyone in the group understood the real relationship of the symbols as a catalyst for inner awakening and connection to the Energy. If this had been understood at the time, we would not have engaged in the process of needing to have everyone's symbols be exactly the same. Is this understood now? Do we understand that Takata's way of teaching allowed each master freedom to discover their own uniqueness? Do we understand that each Master is unique?

I also heard the confusion. No successor had been named. Barbara Weber was representing herself as the next leader. This was a source of concern because she had taken actions and was making claims about some agreements with Takata. Also, she had been invited to participate in the gathering and had declined. Phyllis was questioned about what Takata had said to her before she died. Phyllis said that her grandmother had hoped that she would follow in her footsteps, but that she had not said anything definitive about it. Phyllis was questioned about any additional knowledge or symbols that Takata had given her. She did not have any. But she was the only person that had started to initiate masters in the group. She was in many ways leading the gathering. She said that she was open to being chosen as the person who would follow in Takata's footsteps and eventually that is what appeared to happen. It seemed that nobody wanted the responsibility of the role except Phyllis and nobody really understood what was to happen. I think that we did not have a glimmer of understanding of how Reiki could have moved forward without a "leader."

At that gathering, I received another profound gift. I had a powerful experience regarding the concept of grand master. I knew from deep within my being that I had the potential of being a grand master. I had just been initiated as a Master. I was the "baby" in the group. The possibility of envisioning myself embodying the concept of grand master or the notion of speaking that I had that profound inner knowing was ludicrous and terrifying. I chose not to speak of it.

I wish that I had had the courage and trust of my heart to speak. It could have made a great difference to the future of Reiki. It is clear to me that if I had spoken, it would have initiated a discussion about the concept of "grand master." The future of the Usui System of Reiki may have looked very different. Consider for a moment a discussion about the concept of "grand master" amongst those Reiki masters. "Grand master", not as a title or a position, but as a possibility that each and every one of us can aspire to. I believe that at some level everyone at that gathering had this energy experience of the potential of grand mastery. I know that as one of the participants, I felt that energy through my body and I felt the full force and potential of that awareness. I know that we all have the opportunity to direct our lives to grand mastery. We could be living in the question "What is grand mastery"? A powerful spiritual focus that is our birthright. To live in this question is quite different from acting as if we are "grand masters". If there is a designation or honouring with a title, I believe that it must be earned from living an exemplary life.

It seems to me that everyone has forgotten the naivity of the participants at the meeting. It was the first time that a group of Reiki Masters had sat together in America. We were all essentially "babies" in our practice of Reiki. We were dealing with issues that required wisdom and maturity in the practice of Reiki. I don't feel that we even began to understand that at the time. The lack of understanding of succession, the confusion over Takata's method of teaching, the variations in the symbols, the threat that Barbara Weber would fill the gap provided by Takata's death were expressed fears within the group. Nobody there knew the decision that Phyllis had made "to go for the money," except me and I did not share that information. None of the people present took the fact that Takata had not designated a successor to mean that there was not to be a successor. It is possible that this is the truth.

A further development happened at the next gathering of Reiki Masters, which was held at Barbara Brown's home in British Columbia in 1983. The Reiki Alliance was formed. I can no longer recall exact details. I remember that Phyllis was acting as the leader and most persons there moved with the energy of the situation. I remember spending days working on the purpose statement of the Reiki Alliance. It was the beginning of the further westernisation of Reiki. As people born and raised in the West, we have a certain set of values and definitions. When these definitions and values are applied to a set of values and definitions from another culture, they change the original meaning. In the case of Reiki, I think that we have deviated greatly from the original teaching and intent. It requires intensive study and contemplation to understand a different culture. The only way we had of understanding was through our Western mind set. This Western way of thinking coupled with Phyllis's own motivation led to her being known as Grand Master and later, her proclamation of being a lineage bearer and now, that she is the sole and rightful heir of the Usui System of Reiki. I do not think that what transpired was in the energy of the system itself, rather an outcome of the Western way and Phyllis's ambition.

At the next gathering of the Reiki Alliance, one of the Masters asked Phyllis to talk about what happened when Takata died and the process of how she came to claim to be a successor. She began to tell a story that was a fabrication. I called for truth. Phyllis retracted her statements, but the question remained unanswered. After that gathering, I left the Reiki Alliance. I felt that Phyllis had created a fabrication around the Usui System of Reiki that was a protection for her own purposes. I began to walk my own path with Reiki. I began the process of following my inner wisdom.

For the past seventeen years, I have been deepening my understanding and integrating those first three gifts from my first level seminar and the fourth gift from my sitting in the circle in Hawaii in 1982. Those spiritual experiences have been my guides in this journey. It is a blessing in my life that they have led to greater and greater simplicity and love.

I do not align with the complex notions that are currently expressed by Phyllis about this practice. I do not align with any of the notions of a role of grandmaster, office of grandmaster, lineage bearer, sole and rightful heir of the Usui System of Reiki or licensing fees for Masters because they do not come from the system itself. What is all this for? Who benefits from all this "stuff?" It looks to me like Phyllis does.

The notions of form, discipline and practice are inherent in the way that this healing art is presented by the Reiki Master. At least at one time this was true. In the oral tradition, the emphasis was on self-discovery and embodied in the concept " allow the Energy to lead you". There is no need to have lengthy treatises about it. Trust the Reiki Master to live it and model it. It is simple. It exists.

We are all lineage bearers, rightful heirs and potentially grandmasters. It is not the exclusive right of one person. We have a great opportunity to free ourselves from confusion and return to the true simplicity of this gentle practice. I believe that we have the maturity and understanding at this time to speak, to be heard and bring forth the dignity and integrity of this teaching. We are all responsible for what has happened and we are all responsible for the future.

To be a Reiki Master is to hold a sacred trust. This purity of heart is the essence of what we have to share. I pray that together we can bring that purity forth to clarify the past, live what we teach and teach what we live.

I send you this letter with love and blessings,

Reiki Before Usui

William Lee Rand

(An Evidence Based History of Reiki)”中描述的歷史研究方法。

在我與 Arjava Petter 和 Walter Lubeck 於 2001 年出版的《靈氣之靈/The Spirit of Reiki》一書中,第 22 頁有靈氣的定義。

Reiki Before Usui

by William Lee Rand

This article is part of a series of articles based on the historical research methods described in the article, “An Evidence Based History of Reiki,” which appeared in the Fall 2013 issue of Reiki News Magazine. The purpose of these articles is to dispel the myths about the history and practice of Reiki that first appeared in Western Reiki and have developed since then. It is important that an understanding of Reiki be based on verified facts so that its true nature will be understood, appreciated and practiced.

Many in the Reiki community think that Reiki is something that Usui Sensei developed and that the word should only be applied to his system of healing. But even a cursory examination of the historical evidence reveals that the word Reiki had been in the Japanese lexicon long before Usui Sensei used it. Furthermore, there were other healing systems in existence before Usui Reiki was developed that used the name Reiki and/or used Reiki energy. Clearly, Reiki is a name that isn't exclusive to Usui Reiki but can be applied to any style of healing that uses Reiki energy.

History of the Japanese Language

The Japanese did not have a written language until the seventh century AD when writing became widespread.(1) The system of writing that was developed was based on Chinese ideograms. This system of Chinese characters were first developed around 1200 BC and was standardized during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) resulting in hanzi or kanji as they are called in Japanese. Because of this, many Japanese and Chinese concepts are written using the same characters, making it possible for the Japanese to have an understanding of Chinese writing and vise versa. The hanzi ideograms for rei and ki were introduced to Japan at this time. In Chinese these ideograms are pronounced ling and qi respectively and have similar meanings as they do in Japanese. This indicates that the root concept for Reiki is several thousand years old.(2)

It is not known exactly when Rei and Ki were joined together to form a word; further research is necessary to determine the date and how it was used. But current understanding is that it was sometime after the written Japanese language developed and before it was used by Usui Sensei.

The following is a definition for each of the parts of the Reiki kanji provided by Hiroshi Doi, Japanese Gendai Reiki Ho founder and member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai:

The Kanji of 靈 rei has 3 parts; one 雨, three 口and one 巫.

1) 雨 ame (rain), is a blessing from the Great Universe. It showers down from the sky above, allows living things to grow on the ground, and heals and cleanses everything.

2) Three squares (originally circles) mean the three elements of a human being; body, mind and soul.

3) 巫 means 巫女 (miko) medium who channels God’s will and her mission is to connect heaven and earth.

That is to say, the original meaning of 靈 is the unity of the Great Universe with a human being.

The Kanji of 氣ki is divided into 2 parts.

1. 气, which is said to be formed from the shape of steam or a cloud.

2. The other part, 米, read kome, meaning a staple food like rice.

氣 represents the energy of boiling steam that pushes up the heavy lid of a pot of cooking rice.

The ancient Chinese recognized human breathing, wind (breathing of nature), fog, cloud and steam as 氣. They thought that 1) 氣 is an ever-changing, gaseous material that is ubiquitous and flows everywhere in the universe including in the human body. 2) 氣 is the primal essence of everything in the universe and it is the source of life force and energies that create our physical and mental functions.

Therefore 靈氣 Reiki is the energy of life that is being guided by the Great Universe (the Universal Being of Wisdom and Love) and can be channeled by those who have received this special ability.

Mataji Kawakami

Mataji KawakamiIn an email I received September 29, 2013, Doi Sensei said he had been an honorary adviser for the Global Holistic Healing Association in Japan, an organization that practiced Usui Reiki. Katsuyuki Takashahi was a supporting member who wrote a newsletter called Holistic Healing. In the February 2003 issue of the newsletter he included a note about Mataji Kawakami, who was a Ryojutsu-ka (therapist) and president of Trinity Research. In 1914, Kawakami founded a healing practice he called Reiki Ryoho. He had the term Reiki Ryoho recognized by the medical and educational experts of the time and wrote a book titled, Reiki Ryoho to Sono Koka, 霊気療法とその効果 , Reiki Healing and its Effects, which was published in 1919.

According to Doi Sensei and Toshitaka Mochizuki, another esteemed Japanese Reiki sensei and author, there were several other Reiki healing methods being practiced in Japan prior to Usui Reiki Ryoho. These include: 霊感透熱療法 Reikan Tonetsu Ryoho created by Reikaku Ishinuki, 洗心流霊気療法 Senshin-ryu Reiki Ryoho created by Kogetsu Matsubara and 生道霊掌術 Seido Reisho-jutsu created by Reisen Oyama.(3)

It is also important to note that Usui Sensei didn't call his system of healing Reiki; he called it Shin-shin Kai-Zen Usui Reiki Ryoho (The Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind) or in the shorter version, Usui Reiki Ryoho. This indicates that Usui Sensei understood that what he developed was his style of Reiki healing, not the only style.

So from this information we can see that Reiki isn't a name that applies only to the system of healing Usui Sensei developed, but can be used by any system of healing that uses Reiki energy.

Reiki Energy Defined

So what is Reiki energy and how can we recognize it? In The Spirit of Reiki, a book published in 2001 that I wrote along with Arjava Petter and Walter Lubeck, there is a definition of Reiki on page 22. It explains that Reiki is any healing energy that fulfills the following four criteria:

1. The ability to perform Reiki comes from having received an attunement, rather than developing the ability over time through the use of meditation or other exercises.

2. All Reiki techniques are part of a lineage, meaning the technique has been passed from teacher to student through an attunement process, starting with [the founder of the technique].

3. Reiki does not require that one guides the energy with the mind, as it is guided by the higher power that knows what vibration or combination of vibrations [are needed by the client].

4. Reiki can do no harm.(4)

I hope this gives you a better understanding and appreciation for Reiki. I encourage you to use Reiki more frequently to bring happiness and healing to yourself and to those who come to you for help. May you always be blessed by the love and wisdom of the Universe.
